Ghana Police “BEAT” Oliver Barker Vormawor – The Ghana Circular
Oliver Barker Vormawor, the convener of Democracy Hub who was arrested following the #StopGalamseyNow protest has been beaten in the process of being transferred from Striking Force to a new police station according to a press release by Democracy Hub on 19 October 2024.
Oliver Barker Vormawor who was arrested together with 53 others by the Ghana Police Service on September 22 and 23, 2024 is still in police custody.
He has been charged with stealing (of a police car key), conspiracy, unlawful assembly, causing unlawful damage, offensive conduct conducive to the breach of peace, assault on public officer, and defacement of public property.
Democracy Hub in their press release emphasized that they were “appalled by the continuous unprofessional conduct of the police service and persistent infringement on the dignity of the individuals held in cells awaiting judgement by a court“.
The police are yet to respond to this release. However the Democracy Hub laid down some demands to the Ghana Police.
They are;
- An immediate end to all forms of police brutality
- A thorough investigation into the incident involving Oliver
- Accountability for all officers involved in acts of misconduct
- A complete overhaul of the Police Professional Standards Bureau
- Implementation of stringent measures to protect the rights and dignity of all detainees
Social media followers of Democracy Hub has expressed discontent and concern after learning their convener has been brutalized.
