The Ghana Journalists Association (GJA) has called on outgoing President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo to take immediate measures to restore law and order in the aftermath of the 2024 general elections.
The appeal comes amidst reports of widespread disturbances and vandalism allegedly carried out by individuals believed to be supporters of the National Democratic Congress (NDC). These acts of violence have targeted state institutions, government offices, and public installations, raising concerns about national stability.
Statement from GJA President
Albert Kwabena Dwumfour, President of the GJA, addressed the media on Tuesday, December 10, emphasizing the need for decisive action to safeguard peace.
“We are calling on the President of the Land, who is still President until January 7 and is the Commander-in-Chief of the Ghana Armed Forces, His Excellency Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, to ensure that there is law and order,” Dwumfour stated.
He further urged the President to fulfill his constitutional mandate to maintain security, stating:
“Once he is still at post, we call on him to ensure that the security rises to the task to calm the tension of Ghanaians down.”
Call for Collaboration
The GJA also appealed to political leaders, civil society organizations, and all stakeholders to work together to de-escalate tensions and uphold democratic principles. The association reminded citizens of Ghana’s proud reputation as a democratic beacon in Africa and emphasized the importance of preserving this legacy through peaceful conduct.
