Harmattan season this year has been characterized by an unusual delay – Ghana Meteo Agency

The Ghana Meteorological Agency has provided clarification on the unusual weather conditions being experienced across the country.

In a press release dated December 30, 2025, the agency described the current situation as uncommon.

“The 2025/2026 Harmattan season has been characterized by an unusual delay. As of late December, many parts of southern Ghana are still experiencing rainfall, a phenomenon that is statistically rare for this time of year.

Even in the northern regions, which typically experience peak dryness by now, occasional rainfall has been recorded. This delay is primarily driven by a significant fluctuation in the position of the Inter-Tropical Boundary (ITB),” the statement said.

The agency further explained that, “The ITS, which marks the meeting point of dry Saharan air and moist maritime air, has remained further north than usual. This, coupled with warm Sea Surface Temperatures (SSTs) in the Gulf of Guinea, has allowed moisture to persist over the country, causing these rains.”

It added that, “Looking ahead to the first quarter of 2026, a transition into a generally weak Harmattan season is anticipated, though the public should remain alert for occasional episodes of severe conditions.

In Northern Ghana, the atmosphere will become significantly dry and dusty, leading to visibility levels that are relatively lower than those in the south. However, within the forest regions and parts of the coast, we expect to see a continuation of localized rainfall,” the agency stated.

According to the release, “These showers are expected due to the ongoing fluctuations of the ITS and the influence of the warm ocean temperatures, which prevent the dry air from completely dominating the southern sectors.”…CONTINUE MORE READING>>>
