In a video circulating on X, the grieving mother revealed that her son got married on his 37th birthday but could only spend seven days with his wife, Mercy, before duty called him away.

She recalled how Mercy, a teacher, cried uncontrollably on the day her husband was leaving home. Concerned, she asked her daughter-in-law why she was so emotional, to which Mercy replied, “I just don’t know, but I am too sad.”

“I told her, ‘Why are you crying? He will be back.’ But she just said, ‘Mommy, I don’t know, but I am just sad,’” she recounted.

According to her, Sgt. Addo-Mensah had already secured a visa to the United States and planned to travel in December. “I wanted him to leave so that at least I would also be called ‘Borger’s mother’—the mother of a Ghanaian living abroad,” she said.

She consoled herself with the thought that, though she would never see her son again, his soul would rest peacefully in the Lord.

Two of the victims, Dr. Ibrahim Murtala Muhammed and Alhaji Mohammed Muniru Limuna, have already been buried according to Islamic rites. The remaining six will be given a state burial on Friday, August 15, 2025.

The crash, which happened on Wednesday, August 6, involved a Ghana Armed Forces Z9 helicopter.
