‘It’s unfortunate; we should be learning from best practices’ – Prof. Gyampo on vetting chaos

Professor of Political Science at the University of Ghana, Prof. Ransford Gyampo has condemned the chaotic scenes which occurred during ministerial vetting on Thursday, January 30.

Speaking in an interview on TV3’s Hot Issues, the political science lecturer, now appointed as Acting Chief Executive Officer of Ghana Shippers Authority commended the punitive measures initiated by Speaker Bagbin against the MPs who were involved in the incident.

He explained that considering Ghana’s journey so far in terms of democratic governance, the country must learn from best practices.

“It’s unfortunate. Watching it, I blinked my eyes several times because I felt I wasn’t seeing well.

“But in Ghana we have shown that we want to climb higher the ladder of democratic progression and so because of that we cannot use the bogus practices elsewhere to justify what we want to begin to do.

“We must only be seen to be copying from best practices,” he said.

Prof. Gyampo is hopeful that this punishment will serve as a learning curve for MPs not to be engaged in such incident moving forward.

“I am happy that the Speaker has cracked the whip and suspended some people and I believe that going forward given what has happened and the punishment that is being meted out to those who were found culpable, we will not continue on that tangent as parliament,” Prof. Gyampo added.
