‘I will not leave NPP’ – Ken Agyapong rejects calls to go independent

Kennedy Agyapong, a former New Patriotic Party (NPP) flagbearer hopeful, has firmly rejected the calls from a group of his supporters urging him to run as an independent candidate in the upcoming 2024 elections. The appeal came after Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia secured victory over Agyapong in the NPP’s recent presidential primary election, where nearly 200,000 delegates cast their votes to choose the party’s candidate.

Vice President Bawumia emerged victorious with 61.47% of the total votes, defeating Kennedy Ohene Agyapong, Francis Addai-Nimoh, and Dr. Owusu Afriyie Akoto. Despite the loss, a group of Agyapong’s supporters, representing 37% of NPP delegates, held a news conference on Tuesday, advocating for Agyapong to run independently. They highlighted Agyapong’s outspoken nature, dedication to the country’s well-being, and his significant contributions to job creation through the establishment of companies employing 7,000 workers.

Chairperson Kwabena Yankey emphasized the need for Agyapong to stand as an independent candidate for a “massive win” in the 2024 elections, citing his commitment to fostering growth, innovation, and social welfare in Ghana. The group expressed belief that supporting Agyapong independently was crucial for the nation’s progress.

However, speaking at the USA edition of the ‘Showdown Thanksgiving Party’ in Minnesota on December 2, 2023, Agyapong reassured his supporters that he had no intention of leaving the NPP. The Member of Parliament for Assin Central stated, “I’m still an NPP [member]. We will continue to fight. We are not going to give up. I will sit in there and make the changes. I will be in there and make the changes. So, you should be rest assured.”

Agyapong addressed speculations about a press conference on December 4, emphasizing that he remained dedicated to the NPP. He encouraged party members not to be discouraged by his loss in the presidential primaries, stating, “I will continue to be NPP but Ghana first. If you are NPP and you make a mistake, I will tell you.”

Acknowledging the lessons learned from the election, Agyapong urged his supporters not to give up, expressing that the experience was a valuable preparation for the future. Despite the setback, he affirmed his commitment to the party and hinted at his plans to contribute positively to its growth and development.
