KIA E-gates is a ‘petty’ and ‘mediocre’ project – Fifi Kwetey

General Secretary of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Fifi Fiavi Kwetey has described government’s newly launched digital border control system and e-gates, at the Kotoka International Airport in Accra as a mediocre project.

Speaking exclusively on TV3’s New Day Show on December 4, 2024, the NDC’s General Secretary criticised government for inaugurating a “petty” project when the Terminal 3 infrastructure has already been built by the NDC.

He said the Vice-President, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia ought to have given credit to John Mahama and the NDC for the Terminal 3 infrastructure instead.

“Is it not really a shame that a government will put up Terminal 3, you actually don’t have the humility to admit that this job had been done by your predecessor when a commission was going to be done, you never bothered to invite the predecessor and you can actually have a petty and mediocre E-gate when a massive infrastructure like Terminal 3 had been done,” he stated.

The digital border control system and e-gates at the Kotoka International Airport was launched by the Vice-President on Tuesday, December 3, 2024.

The control system allows a rapid biometric and facial immigration checks of passengers with the Ghana Card which allows persons to swiftly go through designated e-gates without manual immigration checks at the Kotoka International Airport.

Members of the diaspora, and foreign visitors can also use the e-gates by pre-registering biometric data and travel credentials.

Speaking at the launch of the e-gates, Dr. Bawumia said Ghana has taken a ”monumental leap forward in border management with the commissioning of our e-gates,” a system he said was proudly ”designed and built by Ghanaians,” and also ”fully owned and managed by the Ghana Immigration Service.”
