Mahama has performed poorly when it comes to galamsey, I’m not sure he will even get 40% – Otchere-Ankrah

A governance lecturer at Central University, Dr Benjamin Otchere-Ankrah, has given President John Dramani Mahama a low score after one year in office, blaming the government’s failure to deal effectively with illegal mining, known as galamsey.

Speaking during a panel discussion on Peace FM’s morning show Kokrokoo, Dr Otchere-Ankrah admitted that the government has chalked some successes within its first year. However, he said the continuous galamsey problem has badly affected the President’s overall performance.

According to him, illegal mining remains a serious threat to the environment, water bodies, and the livelihoods of local communities, and the government’s response so far has not been strong enough.

“He has done well in some areas, but he has performed poorly when it comes to galamsey. That alone affects his rating.”

The governance expert said the fight against illegal mining is a major national issue that requires strong political will and firm action, adding that failure to make real progress in that area weakens other achievements by the government.

“If I’m to rate him after one year in office, I’m not sure he will even get 40 percent. He needs to pay attention to that,” he remarked…CONTINUE MORE READING>>>
