Mahama’s first year poor as unemployment remains a major concern – Minority

The New Patriotic Party (NPP) Minority in Parliament has criticised President John Dramani Mahama’s performance in his first year in office, describing it as a “relapse into dangerous economic experiments, lawless governance, and predatory partisanship.”

Speaking to the Parliamentary Press Corps on Thursday at Parliament House, Accra, Deputy Minority Leader Madam Patricia Appiagyei raised concerns including an alleged $214 million loss in the Gold-for-Reserves programme, abandoned farmers, and a worsening security situation.

She said the Gold-for-Reserves programme, started under the previous NPP government, had suffered significant losses under the current administration.

“Farmers are struggling with bumper harvests and lack of support, while the government celebrates cedi appreciation,” she said.

On security, Madam Appiagyei, also the NPP Member of Parliament for Asokwa, claimed that armed robbery, murders, and kidnappings were on the rise.

“Unemployment remains a major concern, with over a million young people jobless or underemployed,” she added.

The Minority called for parliamentary investigations into the Gold-for-Reserves programme and demanded accountability for the alleged losses.
