Many of you actions and inactions had a damaging effect on the party’s fortunes – Ken Agyapong slapped
Dr. Kofi Appiah Koranteng, a Deputy Registrar at the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST), has pointed fingers at outspoken politician and flagbearer hopeful Kennedy Agyapong, saying he shares part of the blame for the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) poor showing in the 2024 general elections.

In an interview with Adakabre Frimpong Manso on Neat FM on Wednesday, July 9, 2025, Dr. Koranteng argued that Agyapong’s public conduct—marked by divisive language and inconsistent statements—played a role in weakening the party’s unity and image during the campaign season.
According to him, the former Assin Central MP’s controversial behaviour ahead of the elections damaged the party’s cohesion and caused many Ghanaians to lose trust in the NPP.
“He cannot absolve himself of blame. Many of his actions and inactions had a damaging effect on the party’s fortunes,” he noted.
Dr. Koranteng also criticised Agyapong for failing to retain his parliamentary seat, calling it an unusual situation for someone of his status in the party.
“Every serious leader exiting Parliament ensures their party retains the seat. Kennedy Agyapong is the only MP whose seat flipped to the opposition, now the ruling party. That should tell Ghanaians something,” he added.
Speaking on the topic, “The Loss of the NPP in the 2024 Elections, the Prospects of the Party in 2028, and Restoring the UP Tradition,” Dr. Koranteng questioned Agyapong’s influence in the Central Region. He pointed out that despite claiming to have a strong financial and political hold in the area, the NPP still lost a number of seats there.
“This is someone who claims to have bankrolled the party, but on the other hand, complains of being neglected, while also telling supporters he was awarded lucrative contracts. These contradictions created confusion and eroded trust within the party,” Dr. Koranteng said.
He called on Ghanaians to take a closer look at Agyapong’s role within the party and how his behaviour may have affected the NPP’s unity and its appeal across the country.
