A health professional has warned mothers about the risks of feeding children with cornmeal porridge, locally known as Mmɔri koko.

She explained that corn dough which is left to ferment for a long time before being used to prepare porridge can be harmful to children and may affect brain development.
She said, “Did you know some cornmeal porridges can destroy the brain of a child? Some of the corn dough sold in the market is not safe to use for porridge for children as it it can alter the brain of the child to cause brain damage.”
The health professional further noted that some corn dough sold on the market may already be fermented, especially when it has been stored for a long time. She explained that although fermentation can help digestion, it can also result in alcohol forming in the dough.
She added, “Fermentation can occur in some corn dough available for purchase, particularly if it has been stored for an extended period. While fermentation can be beneficial for digestion, it can also lead to the presence of alcohol in the dough.”
She cautioned that since alcohol affects brain function, using such fermented corn dough to prepare porridge for children may not be safe. She advised mothers to prepare fresh corn dough themselves.
She said, “Since alcohol affects brain function, using such fermented corn dough to prepare porridge for children may not be advisable. A better alternative is to source your own maize and create fresh corn dough at home for your children’s meals.”…CONTINUE MORE READING>>>
