NACOC Deputy DG asked EC Chair and deputies to resign

Deputy Director-General of the Narcotics Control Commission, Alexander Twum-Barimah, has launched a fierce attack on the leadership of the Electoral Commission (EC) of Ghana, demanding the immediate resignation of Chairperson Jean Mensa and her two deputies, Dr. Bossman Asare and Samuel Tettey.

In an interview with Metro TV monitored by DailyNewsGhana, Twum-Barimah did not hold back, describing the EC leadership as incompetent and unfit to manage the country’s electoral affairs. He stated that the three officials should resign before any formal petition is brought against them over their conduct in office.

“Why is she still at post? My advice is that they should go before their petition comes up,” he said.

Twum-Barimah recalled a past incident where Deputy EC Chairperson Samuel Tettey claimed that the previous voters’ register contained photos of trees and animals. He found the claim insulting to Ghanaians and questioned its credibility. He argued that if such images existed, it reflected poorly on the Commission itself since it was responsible for compiling the register.

“Which voters’ register have you seen trees being used in place of someone’s picture? And even if that happened, who did it? Are you not the custodians of the register? Didn’t you input the names and pictures? Then it means you’re admitting that you were extremely incompetent at some point,” he stated.

He also criticised Jean Mensa over what he called a strange use of software in electoral processes. Twum-Barimah mocked her for allegedly using CorelDRAW, a software designed for graphic design, for electoral calculations.

“To Jean Mensa, she is the one that used CorelDRAW to do mathematics. I never knew CorelDRAW could be used for calculations. Isn’t that software meant for art and design? Again, a sign of incompetency,” he said.

He did not spare Dr. Bossman Asare either, suggesting that he should return to academia rather than remain in his role at the EC.

“The other one [Dr Bossman Asare], he has taken sabbatical leave from Legon, so he should go back and teach,” he added.
