National Service Authority confirms mandatory military training in August
The National Service Authority (NSA) has confirmed it is going ahead with plans to introduce a mandatory one-month military training for all National Service personnel across the country.
This was confirmed by the Deputy Director-General of the NSA in charge of Operations, Fuseini Donkor, during an interview with Okay FM on Monday, June 16, 2025.
According to him, the initiative is meant to build character and instill discipline in Ghana’s youth.
“This initiative is necessary for our youth to build the sense of patriotism, discipline, and mental fortitude,” he explained.
The programme, officially called the National Service Emergency Response Readiness Programme (NSERRP), was first introduced following a meeting between NSA officials and the Military High Command at the Ministry of Defence on April 23, 2025.
The goal of NSERRP is to equip service personnel with basic military drills and orientation during their national service year.
The idea also aligns with President John Dramani Mahama’s vision, as outlined in his first State of the Nation Address on February 27, 2025. In that speech, the President proposed short-term military training for graduates to help promote patriotism, discipline, and physical strength.
Earlier, NSA Director-General Felix Gyamfi had revealed that the programme could last up to two months, depending on further consultation, and will form part of the personnel’s overall service experience.
Mr. Fuseini Donkor called on all service personnel to fully participate in the training, stating that it will have a lasting impact on their mindset and help them understand their role in national development.
The basic military training is expected to officially begin on August 3, 2025.
