National Service will be optional – Bawumia

The vice president of Ghana and leader of the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP), Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, has made a major policy announcement: under his prospective leadership, national service would no longer be required.

This declaration represents a break from the nation’s long-standing practice of mandatory national service. He used the changing nature of work and education to highlight the need for a more flexible approach.

He claims that graduates from Ghana would now be free to decide whether or not to perform national duty.

Bawumiah further emphasized that since businesses may now contact different postsecondary schools directly for employment needs, this shift will make the recruitment process easier for them.

On Wednesday, February 7, 2024, at the University of Professional Studies (UPSA) in Accra, he announced this at a national speech.
