Nationwide ‘dumsor’ schedule for Sunday

The Minister of Energy and Green Transition, John Abdullai Jinapor, has announced a temporary nationwide power outage scheduled for Sunday, July 13, 2025, due to planned maintenance by gas suppliers, ENI.

He explained that ENI will temporarily shut off its gas supply valves to allow for rehabilitation works aimed at increasing gas production capacity to 270 million standard cubic feet (MMscf) per day.

“This Sunday, ENI will turn off their valves temporarily to increase gas production to about 270 MMscf. It means that we are stabilizing the energy sector,” the minister stated.

He added that the maintenance, which will last for a few hours during the day, could cause short interruptions in electricity supply.

“…because the plant will be turned off for a short period within the day for maintenance works, we are likely to experience some interruption of power. It is for a good purpose,” he added.

The minister made the announcement at the ground-breaking ceremony for the reconstruction of the 161kV Anwomaso to Kumasi Transmission Line. The project is co-funded by the European Union and the Government of France.

The upgrade is expected to help solve ongoing low voltage issues in Kumasi and the Dunkwa mining areas while improving the efficiency of the national grid.

He further stated that the government, following expert advice, will not switch the affected power plants to liquid fuel during the brief shutdown.

“Based on the advice from engineers, I have directed that we do not attempt to run those plants on liquid fuel for that short period. It involves changing nozzles; it involves a lot of work, and so if we are going off for about four to six hours, you don’t risk transitioning to liquid fuel only to revert to gas,” Jinapor said.

He assured the public that the ministry is taking steps to reduce the impact of the shutdown on consumers.

In a related update, the minister also disclosed that ENI has made a new commercial oil discovery. Tullow Oil is also expected to increase its investment in Ghana’s upstream petroleum sector to support the country’s energy development.
