NDC committed to revamping Free SHS Program
Professor George K.T. Oduro, a Professor of Educational Leadership at the University of Cape Coast (UCC), has affirmed the National Democratic Congress (NDC)’s unwavering commitment to improving the quality and equity of the Free Senior High School (SHS) program in Ghana.
In a recent statement, Prof. Oduro assured the public that “the future of quality Senior High School education is in the capable hands of the NDC’s flagbearer, John Dramani Mahama.”
Prof. Oduro, who also serves as the Chairman of the Education Committee of the NDC, emphasized that the party would review the implementation of the Free SHS program to ensure it yields better quality outcomes, noting that the standard of education in Ghana has declined under the current administration.
“The next NDC government will abolish the double-track system and restore a stable, one-track academic calendar. We will also ensure dedicated funding for Free SHS and undertake an emergency infrastructure drive to complete the abandoned E-blocks,” Prof. Oduro stated.
He made these remarks during a press conference at UCC, organized by University Lecturers for Improved Free SHS.
Prof. Oduro urged the public to disregard false claims from the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP) that John Dramani Mahama plans to cancel the Free SHS policy. He reassured Ghanaians that the NDC is committed to reviewing and improving the Free SHS program.
“We, the lecturers for Improved Free SHS, assure Ghanaians that the NDC will fully commit to reviewing the Free SHS implementation policy,” he said.
The professor also criticized the current administration, led by President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo and Vice President Dr. Alhaji Mahamudu Bawumia, for what he described as reckless spending on the Free SHS program. He pointed out the ongoing challenges, including a significant infrastructural deficit and a lack of adequate teaching and learning resources.
Prof. Oduro called on Ghanaians to lend their full support to the NDC’s vision of resetting the educational system and enhancing the Free SHS program in order to build a stronger nation.
He concluded by stating that the next NDC government would implement sound macro and microeconomic policies, prioritizing the funding of Free SHS to ensure its sustainability and success.
