NDC’s Kojo Adu Asare opens up on NDC testing the law for Mahama’s third term

A leading member of the ruling National Democratic Congress (NDC), Kojo Adu Asare, has said President John Dramani Mahama should seek a third term in office.

According to him, the president deserves another term because many Ghanaians want him to continue leading the country due to his good performance.

Kojo Adu Asare, a former Member of Parliament for Adentan, made these comments in an interview on Asempa 94.7 FM. He suggested that Ghana’s presidential term limits will be “tested”.

When asked whether Mahama deserves another term, he replied, “I think so.”

“If Ghanaians want him, why not?” he added, insisting that the public’s mood and approval ratings favour the president.

He further argued that Mahama’s first term should not count, saying he would now be running for his second.

“It is about law and we are going to law… It is about governance, and the people love someone who they think can help develop the nation,” he said.

He claimed the president’s achievements show he could transform the country if given more time. He also pointed to countries like Singapore, which developed rapidly under long-serving leaders.

President Mahama announces stand on 2028 elections

Meanwhile, in August 2025, President Mahama dismissed rumours that he might seek another term in 2028. He made it clear during an official visit to Singapore that he would not contest in the next general elections.

For months, some members of the public and political analysts had speculated that he could be convinced to run again.

But the president ended the speculation, saying stepping aside in 2028 would give him the moral authority to prioritise national interest over electoral pressure.
