Water is life — we all know that. Our bodies need it to stay healthy, strong, and active. But did you know there are certain times when drinking water can actually do more harm than good? Yes, even something as harmless as water can cause problems if taken at the wrong moment. Here are a few times you should avoid drinking water, no matter how thirsty you feel.

1. Right Before or After a Meal

Many people drink a full glass of water just before eating or immediately after. But this can weaken your digestion. When your stomach is full of water, it dilutes the digestive juices that break down food. It’s better to drink water about 30 minutes before a meal or 45 minutes after.

2. During Heavy Exercise

When you’re working out and sweating a lot, you might feel tempted to gulp down plenty of water. But drinking too much, too fast, can cause stomach cramps or even make you feel dizzy. It’s better to take small sips slowly while exercising.

3. Right After Waking Up (in Large Amounts)

Drinking water first thing in the morning is healthy, but moderation matters. Don’t gulp down a full litre at once. Start with a small glass to wake up your organs gently. Too much at once can shock your system.

4. Before Going to Bed

It’s a bad idea to drink too much water right before sleeping. You might find yourself waking up several times at night to urinate, disturbing your rest. A small sip is fine if you’re really thirsty, but avoid large amounts.

5. When You’re Sweating Profusely Without Replacing Salts

If you’ve been sweating a lot — maybe from the sun or hard work — and you only drink plain water, your salt level can drop too low. This may cause headaches or dizziness. In such cases, add a little pinch of salt or take an oral rehydration solution.

6. Immediately After Eating Spicy or Oily Food

When you eat peppery or greasy food, cold water might seem like a relief, but it can actually trap oil and make digestion harder. Try warm water or wait a bit before drinking.

7. After Taking Certain Medicines
