One Ghana Movement condemns post-election violence, calls for peace and unity

The One Ghana Movement has unequivocally condemned the ongoing violence, vandalism, and looting reported in several parts of the country, including Damongo, Awutu Senya, Nsawam, Tamale, Techiman South, and Accra, following the presidential election.

In a statement on December 10, the Movement said these acts of aggression are a threat to the peace, stability, and unity of the nation.

One Ghana commended the NPP’s Presidential Candidate, Dr. Bawumia for the “peaceful concession” of defeat in the spirit of democratic consolidation.

“However, the post-election violence undermines the values of democracy, justice, and rule of law that Ghanaians have collectively worked so hard to uphold.

“The One Ghana Movement urges all citizens to remember that elections are not just a competition of ideas and policies but also a reflection of our shared commitment to a peaceful and united Ghana. Violence and destruction are antithetical to this vision,” the statement added.

The Movement wants President elect, John Dramani Mahama, to take immediate and decisive action to address this unrest.

The Group has urged Mahama to “publicly and unequivocally condemn the violence that is being perpetrated in his name. Call on all Ghanaians to desist from any further acts of violence, vandalism, and lawlessness.”

“Assure the public that he will work with the Ghana Police Service and other security agencies to ensure that perpetrators of these criminal acts are held accountable according to the law without fear or favour and irrespective of their political affiliation,” the statement noted.

One Ghana Movement called on President Akufo-Addo to direct the Ghana Police Service to act swiftly and impartially to restore order, protect lives and property in the affected communities and commence arrests and prosecutions of perpetrators.

The Movement reaffirms its commitment to promoting peace, unity, and development and urged Ghanaians to channel their energies toward building a prosperous nation where democratic principles are respected and upheld.

“As a nation, we have overcome challenges before, and we are confident that together, we can navigate these trying times to emerge even stronger. Let us rise above division and hatred to embrace the spirit of togetherness that defines us as Ghanaians.”
