Over 15,000 persons infected with HIV across Ghana last year – Ghana AIDS Commission

The Ghana AIDS Commission says more than 15,290 new HIV infections were recorded between January and December last year, raising concerns about the growing number of cases, especially among young people.

Dr. Fred Nana Poku, Director of Technical Services at the Commission, said young people aged 15 to 24 made up about 4,700 of the new infections, representing 31% of all cases.

He explained that this is a sharp rise compared to previous years, when the youth contributed between 25% and 28% of new infections. He said the latest figures show that young people are now the fastest-growing group in the country’s HIV statistics.

Describing the situation as alarming, Dr. Poku urged young people to take protection seriously and practice responsible sexual behaviour. He said reversing the trend will require more education, testing and preventive measures in communities.

He added that the Greater Accra Region still records the highest number of HIV cases, while the northern regions have the lowest.
