Police in viral video slapping reporter at Ablekuma North interdicted
The Ghana Police Service has interdicted one of its officers who was deployed to the Ablekuma North constituency after he was caught on video assaulting a GHOne TV journalist.

The incident took place at the North Odorkor Polling Station 2, where the officer reportedly confronted the journalist and asked him to move away from the inner perimeter of the voting area. The situation quickly escalated, and the officer allegedly became aggressive and slapped the journalist, an act that has drawn widespread condemnation.
In a statement signed by ASP Richmond Mensah on behalf of the Director of Public Affairs, the Ghana Police Service confirmed the assault and acknowledged the viral video circulating on social media.
According to the statement, the officer in question has been withdrawn from election duty in the constituency. Furthermore, he has been interdicted and referred to the Police Professional Standards Bureau (PPSB) for a formal investigation.
The police assured the public that they are taking the matter seriously and have launched a thorough investigation. They also promised to provide updates as the investigation progresses.
The journalist involved, Agyekum Banahene, had earlier stated that he feared for his safety following the incident. He described the officer’s conduct as unprovoked and a direct attack on press freedom.
Media organizations and civil society groups have since called on the authorities to ensure justice is served and that press freedom is respected, especially during sensitive electoral processes.
