Police resolve incident involving broken seal on electoral material bag
The Ghana Police Service has resolved a potentially contentious incident involving a broken seal on an electoral material bag in Koforidua in the Eastern Region. The issue, which arose during the distribution of election materials to a constituency, initially raised concerns about the security and integrity of the election process.
In a statement issued on Thursday, the Police clarified that the seal on one of the bags was found broken while the materials were being removed from the armoury.
Explaining the situation, the Police noted, “It has been revealed that when the bags were removed from the armoury, one of the seals was found to be off. It has been established that this occurred as a result of the packing and unpacking of the bags.” This explanation was intended to allay fears of intentional tampering.
To address concerns and ensure transparency, the Electoral Commission (EC) and representatives of political parties collaborated with the Police to investigate the matter. After a thorough examination, they confirmed that the contents of the bag remained intact and untouched.
“The broken seal has been found, and the contents of the bag have been confirmed to be intact by the stakeholders, including the Electoral Commission and representatives of the political parties who witnessed the incident,” the Police statement emphasized.
The incident has sparked conversations about the importance of securing electoral materials to prevent misunderstandings. Election stakeholders have called for additional measures to improve the handling and monitoring of election resources, particularly during distribution. This is viewed as a necessary step to sustain public trust in the electoral process.
The Electoral Commission has praised the swift response to the issue, citing it as an example of cooperation among key stakeholders in safeguarding democratic processes. Representatives of political parties who witnessed the investigations also commended the transparency exhibited by all parties involved.
The Police urged the public not to be alarmed by isolated incidents, stressing that robust systems are in place to address any unforeseen issues during the electoral process. They encouraged citizens to remain engaged and report any irregularities to ensure accountability.
