Popular Africa politician dead in India
Godiya Akwashiki, the senator who represented Nasarawa North Senatorial District in the National Assembly, has passed away at the age of 52.

Family sources confirmed on Thursday that Mr Akwashiki died on Wednesday, 31 December 2025, at a hospital in India, where he had been undergoing treatment for a long illness.
He had been unwell since his re election in 2023 and was admitted to hospitals at different times in Nigeria, the United Kingdom, and India. The exact nature of his illness was not disclosed.
Mr Akwashiki was first elected to the Senate in 2019 and won a second term, becoming the only senator from Nasarawa North to serve two consecutive terms since the state was created. He was a member of the Social Democratic Party.
Before entering the Senate, he served several terms in the Nasarawa State House of Assembly, where he rose to become Majority Leader and later Deputy Speaker.
He was born on 3 August 1973 in Angba Iggah in the Nassarawa Eggon Local Government Area of Nasarawa State. He was widely known for his strong grassroots support and emphasis on constituency based projects.
During his time in the Senate, he took part in legislative work and oversight activities focused on rural development, education, youth empowerment, and infrastructure within the Nasarawa North Senatorial District.
Political colleagues and community leaders across the district have described his death as a major loss, citing his influence in state and national politics and his efforts to improve social and economic opportunities for his constituents.
