Read full judgement on Wontumi’s defamation case at the Supreme Court

On November 13, 2025, the Supreme Court dismissed a defamation suit filed by Ghana’s Special Envoy for Reparations, Dr. Ekwow Spio-Garbrah, against the Ashanti Regional Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Bernard Antwi Boasiako, popularly known as Chairman Wontumi.

Dr. Spio-Garbrah, a former Minister of Trade and Industry, had sued Chairman Wontumi in 2022 at the Kumasi High Court, demanding $10 million in damages against him and his media outlet, Wontumi TV/Radio, over comments he said were defamatory.

According to the suit, Wontumi and his media platform had referred to him as a “thief” ahead of the 2020 general elections. Dr. Spio-Garbrah quoted Wontumi as saying: “All that Inusah Fuseini is saying is that even he, Inusah Fuseini, is a thief. If you mention Spio-Garbrah’s name, he is a thief, Sylvester Mensah is a thief, Joshua Alabi is a thief, all their presidential candidates are thieves, so if John Mahama is a thief, then let us allow him to continue stealing.”

In his response, Chairman Wontumi denied any malicious intent, stating that he was only interpreting comments made by former MP Inusah Fuseini.

The Supreme Court, in a unanimous ruling, held that the words spoken by Chairman Wontumi on his media platform did not defame Dr. Spio-Garbrah and therefore dismissed the appeal…CONTINUE MORE READING>>>
