Ten (10) animals that give birth and then die

In the animal kingdom, some species give up their own lives to ensure the survival of their offspring.

This Mayfly was photographed as it emerged early in the season, Trout rise readily to this small fly. Important insect in fly fishing also.

These animals show extreme dedication by reproducing and then dying shortly afterwards. Below are ten examples.

Pacific salmon

After swimming thousands of kilometres to spawn, Pacific salmon lay their eggs in freshwater rivers. Once reproduction is complete, their bodies begin to shut down and they die soon after.

Octopus

Female octopuses guard their eggs until they hatch. During this period, they stop eating and eventually die from exhaustion and starvation.

Praying mantis

In some cases, the female praying mantis eats the male after mating. This provides energy for egg production, and the female dies shortly after laying the eggs.

Male marsupial mouse (Antechinus)

Male Antechinus mate continuously for up to two weeks, using up all their energy. After the mating season, stress and exhaustion lead to their death.

Mayfly

Mayflies have extremely short adult lifespans. After mating and laying eggs, they usually die within 24 hours.

Honeybee drone

Male honeybees, known as drones, die immediately after mating. Their reproductive organs are torn from their bodies during the process.

Common house spider

Some female spiders die soon after their eggs hatch, leaving the young spiders to survive on their own.

Squid

Many squid species die shortly after laying eggs. Their bodies weaken and they are often eaten by predators.

Opossum

Certain species of opossum, particularly short tailed ones, die soon after giving birth due to stress and loss of energy.

Eelpout fish

This deep sea fish gives birth to live young, but the strain of childbirth is so intense that the mother dies afterwards.
