That is why I am saying something is wrong with that political party – Tanko-Computer drags NPP

The Acting National Elections Director of the National Democratic Congress, Rashid Tanko-Computer, has described the New Patriotic Party’s decision to contest the upcoming Ayawaso East by election as a waste of time.

Speaking in an interview on TV3’s Ghana Tonight, Tanko Computer said results from past elections show that the NDC has a clear advantage in the constituency, making it almost impossible for the NPP to win the seat.

He questioned the electoral strategy of the NPP, suggesting the party’s decision does not make sense based on available data.

“That is why I am saying something is wrong with that political party. Their election matrix is not working for them,” he said.

Tanko Computer explained that in the last election, the NDC secured over 22,000 votes, while the NPP polled a little above 9,000 votes.

“Even if they get 100 per cent of their previous votes, they will still not reach 19,000. We are already above 22,000,” he stated.

He added that the NPP could further damage its public image if it goes ahead to contest the by election.

“If they want to maintain the modicum of respect they have in the eyes of the general public, they should not contest this election,” he said.

Despite his criticism, Tanko Computer acknowledged that opposition parties have the constitutional right to contest the election, especially since the former Member of Parliament, who held the seat for four consecutive terms, is no longer contesting.

“This is a man who held this constituency for four times, and he is now off the scene. So, you cannot take it away from a political party if they want to test their mettle,” he noted.

He also said the NDC is yet to officially announce its candidate, adding that more details will become clear after nominations close.

“After February 7, we will know who our candidate is, and then we will see what the way forward will look like,” he said.

The Ayawaso East by election is scheduled for March 3, 2026.
