The fact that NPP has not won Jirapa since 1992 is a blot on the conscience of the party – Dr Ekua Amoakoh
A Deputy Spokesperson for former Vice-President Dr Mahamudu Bawumia, Dr Ekua Amoakoh, has strongly defended the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) position in the Jirapa Constituency, countering claims that the party lacks grassroots support there and pledging renewed efforts to reverse its long-standing electoral setbacks.

Dr Amoakoh made the remarks on Facebook on Wednesday, January 7, 2026, in response to statements from Kwasi Kwarteng, a spokesperson for Kennedy Ohene Agyapong’s campaign. Kwarteng had referenced the 2024 presidential election results in Jirapa—home to the political legacy of Ghana’s independence-era politician Dr Kofi Abrefa Busia and his ally S.D. Dombo—to argue that Dr Bawumia does not enjoy the backing of Dombo’s family or the wider constituency.
Acknowledging the NPP’s historical challenges in Jirapa, Dr Amoakoh noted that the party has never won the parliamentary seat since the inception of the Fourth Republic in 1992.
However, she emphasised that this history predates Dr Bawumia’s leadership ambitions and should not be seen as a reflection on him personally.
“The fact that the NPP has not won Jirapa since 1992 is a blot on the conscience of the party as a whole, not a problem that started with Dr Mahamudu Bawumia. We will put in the necessary work to improve our numbers there and ultimately win the seat,” she stated.
Dr Amoakoh stressed that the NPP’s renewed strategy in Jirapa would focus on hard work, meaningful engagement, and respect for local dynamics, rather than on internal criticism or disparagement.
She also criticised attempts by Ken’s camp to frame the contest in divisive terms, warning that such tactics could alienate potential voters.
In a pointed rebuttal to claims that Dr Bawumia lacks support from the Dombo political tradition, the Deputy Spokesperson highlighted that endorsements for the former Vice-President come from members of the Dombo family as well as respected stalwarts who identify with the Dombo heritage.
She argued that this backing directly challenges the notion that Jirapa has wholly rejected Dr Bawumia or his political lineage…CONTINUE MORE READING>>>
