UPDATE: Ofori-Atta has applied to become a US permanent resident – Report

Renowned private lawyer Martin Kpebu has revealed that former Finance Minister Ken Ofori-Atta, currently in the custody of US immigration authorities, has applied to become a permanent resident of the United States.

Speaking on TV3, Kpebu explained that Ofori-Atta’s US citizen son filed the application on his behalf several months ago, a fact he had disclosed two months earlier but which was initially doubted. The recent public notice from Ofori-Atta’s lawyers confirms this information, stating that he has a pending petition to adjust his status in the US—a process that leads to permanent residency.

Kpebu outlined the benefits of obtaining permanent residency, noting that it allows Ofori-Atta to stay indefinitely in the US without a visa and provides more rights compared to standard visitor visas (B1/B2). Permanent residency would also allow him to travel freely and enjoy broader protections in American society.

The lawyer criticized Ghana’s Office of the Special Prosecutor (OSP) for not seeking to try Ofori-Atta in absentia months ago, saying the delay has given him time to explore legal avenues in the US, making it potentially more difficult for Ghana to bring him back to face justice.
