Vacant seats controversy: NDC will boycott Parliament until elections are over
Former President John Mahama has once again expressed dissatisfaction with the current leadership of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), accusing them of refusing to acknowledge the National Democratic Congress (NDC) as the majority in Parliament.
During his Western Regional tour, Mahama expressed his belief that the NPP’s refusal to accept the NDC’s parliamentary majority would soon be corrected once the results of the upcoming general election are declared.
“The NPP has refused to accept that the NDC is the majority in Parliament. That is okay. They should just be patient and wait until the elections are over. The parliamentary results will be declared, and everyone will attest to the fact that the NDC is Ghana’s majority,” Mahama stated.
The former president also commented on the recent move by the NPP government to recall Parliament for further deliberations with only 12 days left before the elections.
Mahama raised concerns over the timing and feasibility of such a call, questioning why Parliament was being recalled so close to the election and suggesting that it was an unnecessary distraction for lawmakers focused on their campaigns.
“We have also been served a document recalling us to Parliament for some deliberations. It’s 12 days to elections; how do you recall Parliament? Does the NPP expect us to leave our campaigns and come sit in Parliament? The NPP can choose to go to Parliament alone. The NDC is not returning to Parliament until after the general election when they have been shown their smoothness level,” Mahama added.
