Victims of Buduburam rock blast disaster decry ‘paltry’ amounts paid as compensation

Victims of the October 14 rock blast disaster at Buduburam have expressed disappointment at the amount of money being paid to them as compensation.

The Gomoa East branch of the National Disaster Management Organissation (NADMO) on behalf of government began paying compensations to the affected victims on Thursday, 28th November.

The Gomoa East NADMO Director in charge of the disbursement, Robert Hackman told 3news that a total of GHC1,448,000.000 was allocated to cater for the compensation.

However, the victims got agitated upon receiving their respective compensation packages as they found the monies given them to be insufficient in catering for the damages.

One of them, Vida Ampah, a fish monger who broke down in tears after receiving GHC4,000.00 instead of GHC 12,700.00, said she had agreed on with the committee.

According to her, having lost some 15 baskets full of fried fish with each costing not less that GHC1,500, she expected to receive an amount higher than GHC4,000.

Owner of MS Buabeng ventures, Mustapha Buabeng, after shutting his business operations due to the disaster only received an amount that according to him, can cater for only part of the damages caused at his workplace, without any additional funds to commiserate what he might have lost as a result of the closure.

He told 3news.com that he feels disappointed but is left with no option than to receive what was offered him.

Meanwhile, the Gomoa East Chief Executive, Solomon Darko Kwaam, has parried the claims by the affected victims as he argues that they have received deserving amounts.

He told 3news.com that the committee which was put in charge of the assessment of the impact of the disaster as well as propose rightful compensations took steps to even double the amount each victim deserved.

He has however assured that all victims of the disasters that have occurred as a result of the contractors, Nag Fairmount’s, operations will be duly compensated by government.
