WAEC Defends Delay in 2024 WASSCE Results Release, Cites Fairness and Integrity

The West African Examinations Council (WAEC) has justified the delay in releasing the 2024 West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE) results, stating that ongoing investigations into alleged malpractice are necessary to ensure fairness.
John Kapi, Head of Public Relations at WAEC, explained that the delay is crucial to maintaining the integrity of the examination process and ensuring that only deserving candidates receive their grades.
NUGS Issues Ultimatum Over Delayed Results
WAEC’s explanation follows mounting pressure from the National Union of Ghana Students (NUGS), which has issued a one-week ultimatum demanding the release of all withheld results. The student union has threatened nationwide protests if WAEC fails to comply and has also called for the removal of WAEC Ghana’s Head, citing alleged unfair treatment of candidates accused of malpractice.
Speaking on Eyewitness News on Tuesday, February 4, 2025, Kapi reassured students and stakeholders that WAEC remains committed to a credible and transparent grading system.
“We need to sit down and probably bring on board a number of stakeholders to decide on this issue so that we are awarding grades to people who deserve them,” he stated.
Concerns Over Student Anxiety and Uncertainty
Despite WAEC’s assurances, students and stakeholders remain frustrated by the prolonged delay, which has left many uncertain about their academic future. NUGS and other advocacy groups argue that the delay is causing undue stress, especially for students seeking university admissions or employment opportunities.
With the one-week deadline looming, all eyes are on WAEC’s next move as student groups prepare for possible demonstrations if their demands are not met.
