WATCH: I fought to get here’ – Akwatia MP Ernest Kumi’s last interview breaks heart
The death of Ernest Yaw Kumi, Member of Parliament for Akwatia and a member of the opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP), has been confirmed by several party officials, following widespread reports of his sudden passing on Monday, July 7, 2025.
The news has come as a shock to many Ghanaians, especially considering there had been no public reports of the MP suffering from any illness or being involved in an accident. In fact, just days before his passing, Mr. Kumi had been actively engaging in media interviews and political commentary.
A video that has since gone viral shows the late MP passionately speaking on Adom TV on Friday, July 4, just three days before his death. In the interview, he strongly criticised the ruling National Democratic Congress (NDC) over the planned re-run of parliamentary elections in parts of the Ablekuma South Constituency in the Greater Accra Region.
Referencing his own legal battles to retain his seat in Parliament, Mr. Kumi appeared visibly frustrated with what he described as unfair political tactics and judicial interference. He questioned why the NPP was conceding to the NDC on matters he believed were politically biased.
“What is wrong? Why are we conceding to this? Must the NDC necessarily win all the seats in Parliament?” he asked during the interview.
He went on to suggest that if it were up to him, the NPP should withdraw entirely from Parliament, echoing the party’s controversial decision in 1992 to boycott the legislative elections.
“If the NPP is going to listen to me—if it were up to me—just as we did in 1992, we should leave all the seats for them; all of us should leave Parliament for them to take every seat,” he said.
“Look at what they are doing to the rest of us. Look at the fight I have fought to get here. Look at what they are putting these women through. A boycott could even have been better,” he added.
Mr. Kumi’s remarks, made with strong emotion, have now taken on a haunting tone following his unexpected death. His supporters and constituents are struggling to come to terms with his passing, especially in light of his recent public appearance and defiant words.
The late MP’s passing has left the Akwatia Constituency in deep mourning, and tributes have begun pouring in from both sides of the political divide. Many have described him as a bold, outspoken, and determined figure who fought fiercely for what he believed in.
