Watch Ken Agyapong’s ‘fast and furious’ style lead citizen’s arrest of hit-and-run truck driver

Former Member of Parliament for Assin Central and popular businessman, Hon. Kennedy Ohene Agyapong, once again proved that he is a man of action. On Sunday, May 25, 2024, he personally chased and arrested a truck driver who had allegedly knocked down a motorcyclist and tried to escape from the scene.

The incident happened on the Cape Coast-Assin Fosu road when Kennedy Agyapong and his team were returning from an event in Cape Coast. While driving through the Effutu Municipality, particularly between Nsuta and Anyinabrim, they came across a terrible road accident that had just occurred.

A motorcyclist had been run over by a heavy-duty truck. The rider was lying motionless on the road, already dead, and his motorbike was on fire. The scene was horrifying. Many bystanders looked on in shock, unsure of what to do.

But not Kennedy Agyapong.

Immediately alarmed by what he had seen, the former MP did not just drive past. Instead, he quickly took control of the situation. According to eyewitnesses, he ordered his team to follow the truck, which was speeding away from the scene. With determination, Kennedy and his convoy chased the truck down, managing to stop it a few kilometres away from the accident scene.

When they finally caught up with the truck, Kennedy got down and confronted the driver. In a video that has since gone viral on social media, the outspoken politician is seen questioning the driver. “Why did you have to run away? If you have committed a mistake, why then do you run away?” he asked the visibly shaken driver.

The truck, with registration number AS 9475-19, had allegedly engaged in wrongful overtaking — a common but dangerous habit among some commercial drivers in Ghana — and ended up knocking the motorcyclist. The driver, together with his mate, was arrested on the spot by Kennedy Agyapong and his team. They then handed them over to the Ghana Police Service at Assin Manso.

Driver Claims Innocence

Even after being arrested, the driver maintained that he had no idea he had caused an accident. According to him, he didn’t feel anything unusual and was unaware that he had run over a motorcyclist. However, this claim has been strongly disputed by other drivers who were present at the scene.

Several eyewitnesses confirmed that the truck driver was overtaking at a dangerous bend and failed to observe the motorcyclist who was approaching from the opposite direction. The overtaking resulted in a head-on collision that killed the rider on the spot.

“This driver was speeding and overtaking anyhow,” one commercial driver at the scene said. “He didn’t even look properly before entering the opposite lane. That poor man on the motorbike had no chance.”

The motorbike, after being hit, burst into flames and was still burning when Kennedy and his team arrived. The fire drew more attention, and several drivers and passersby stopped to see what had happened.

Kennedy Agyapong’s Swift Action Draws Praise

News of Kennedy Agyapong’s brave move spread quickly, with many Ghanaians taking to social media to praise him for his courage and quick response. In a country where hit-and-run cases are sadly becoming common, his decision to chase and arrest the driver was seen as commendable.

“This is what we expect from our leaders,” a Facebook user wrote. “He could have ignored the accident, but he didn’t. Kennedy Agyapong deserves all the praise.”

Others said it shows the kind of leadership Ghana needs — bold, decisive, and willing to stand up for justice.

“This is not about politics. It’s about humanity. Kennedy Agyapong saw a life lost and didn’t wait for the police to arrive. He chased the suspect and made sure justice starts immediately,” another person commented on X (formerly Twitter).

No Official Police Statement Yet

As of the time of writing this report, the Ghana Police Service has not released an official statement on the incident. However, it is believed that the truck driver and his mate are in police custody at Assin Manso and are likely to be processed for court soon.

The body of the deceased motorcyclist has reportedly been taken to the morgue for preservation and autopsy, while investigations into the matter continue.

The Bigger Picture: Road Safety in Ghana

This incident once again brings attention to the growing concern about road safety in Ghana. Reckless driving, wrongful overtaking, overspeeding, and poorly maintained roads have all contributed to the high number of road accidents in the country.

According to statistics from the National Road Safety Authority (NRSA), hundreds of lives are lost every year due to road crashes. Many of these accidents are avoidable if drivers obey simple traffic rules and exercise caution, especially on highways and rural roads.

Hit-and-run cases are also becoming more frequent. In many cases, drivers knock down pedestrians or motorcyclists and flee, hoping to escape responsibility. Sadly, most of these victims die because no one stops to help or report the incident early enough.

This is why Kennedy Agyapong’s action has been hailed not only as heroic but also necessary.

“It is time we stop the culture of silence and fear. If a leader like Kennedy can stop his journey and chase a driver who killed someone and ran away, it should serve as a big message to everyone. You can’t take a life and go free,” one roadside mechanic told JoyNews.

Kennedy Agyapong: No Stranger to Tough Action

This is not the first time Kennedy Agyapong has stepped in to handle matters directly. Throughout his political career, he has built a reputation as a no-nonsense person who takes issues into his own hands when the need arises. Whether it’s fighting for justice, exposing corruption, or speaking bluntly about national issues, Kennedy is known for his fearless personality.

Although he lost the NPP flagbearer race ahead of the 2024 elections, his influence in Ghanaian politics remains strong. Incidents like this continue to show that he is still actively involved in national affairs and always ready to act when needed.

Conclusion

The citizen’s arrest carried out by Kennedy Agyapong has reignited national conversation about road safety, leadership, and justice. While the legal system takes over the case of the truck driver, many Ghanaians are using this moment to reflect on how we treat human life on our roads.

It is a call for every driver to be more responsible and for authorities to strictly enforce traffic laws. Most importantly, it reminds us that leadership is not only about sitting in offices — sometimes, it is about taking action when others are afraid to.

As investigations continue, the family of the deceased will be hoping for justice, and the public will be watching closely to see how this case ends. But one thing is certain: on that Sunday afternoon, Kennedy Agyapong didn’t just drive by — he stood up for justice, and Ghana took notice.
