Watch what these nursing students were filmed doing when they received their ‘allawa’

Following the government’s payment of their outstanding allowance arrears, nursing students around the country are overjoyed.

On Wednesday, May 22, 2024, a Facebook post from Neat FM, an Accra-based radio station, shows a number of nursing school trainees celebrating their payout.

While displaying texts on their phones to the camera proving they had paid the allowance—known as “allawa”—some of the trainees could be seen applauding Vice President Mahamudu Bawumia.

“Always, always, always. One female student was heard repeating, “Four more for Bawumia, four more for Bawumia,” as she displayed a notification on her phone.

In the meantime, the meadia were informed by a nursing student that some of their debts have been settled.

She added that three months’ worth of arrears for October, November, and December of 2023 have been paid to second- and third-year students at her school.

She said that none of their allowances for 2024 have been paid.

Recall that during a campaign event in the Bono Region, Dr. Bawumia, the flagbearer of the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP), was approached by a female final-year nursing student who said she had never received the government allowance (allawa) intended for students.

“The question I want to ask is, when are we getting our ‘allowance’? Since I started school, I have not received my allowance to date, and I’m in my last semester. Some of us are not even able to pay our school fees.

“Those who are not able to pay their fees would be sacked; they wouldn’t be allowed to write the exams. If the ‘allowance’ had been given to us, they would have been able to pay their fees. So, my question is, when are we getting the allawa?” she asked.
