Members of the Western Region’s House of Chiefs have expressed growing dissatisfaction with the Akufo-Addo administration, accusing the government of neglecting the area and allowing the region’s well-being to deteriorate.
The chiefs’ grievances, voiced during a recent engagement with the Nationl Democratic Congress (NDC) flagbearer John Mahama, highlight a range of issues that have left the region struggling.
The chiefs criticized the government’s handling of infrastructure projects, which they described as disastrous.
Among the most pressing concerns were the decline in cocoa production, abandoned road projects, the devastation caused by illegal mining, and a lack of support for the fishing industry. The chiefs argued that these problems have contributed to unbearable living conditions for the people of the region, and they called for swift government intervention to address these critical issues.
“Over the past eight years, we’ve seen little to no support from the government,” one chief remarked.
“Our roads are in bad shape, and many projects have been left incomplete. We’re really suffering here in the Western region, despite our contributions to the national economy through resources like oil and gold.”
The chiefs also questioned why the region, which plays a vital role in the country’s resource production, had been left behind in terms of development. The lack of infrastructure, they claimed, was impeding economic growth and worsening the standard of living for the people.
The queen mothers of the region also voiced their frustrations, with one appealing directly to Mahama.
“When you come into power, remember us,” she urged.
“We have been neglected for far too long. Our water bodies have been destroyed, and our people continue to suffer from a lack of basic resources.”
