Why renting is smarter than building a house Geh Geh shares financial tips

In a conversation on the Honest Brunch podcast, Nigerian comedian Geh Geh shared his unconventional take on financial decisions, particularly in the context of homeownership and marriage.

His views are raising eyebrows and sparking debate, especially among younger audiences looking to navigate their financial futures.

Geh Geh began by addressing the common practice of building a house upon receiving a windfall.

“Look, building a house is not a financially wise decision,” he declared, challenging the popular notion that owning property is the ultimate financial achievement.

Instead, he suggested renting a property and redirecting the funds that would be used for construction into investments.

“Those funds can go into investments that will generate profits. With those profits, you can comfortably pay rent every year, and your money keeps working for you,” he explained.

His advice isn’t just about short-term financial prudence but about securing long-term stability. “Think about it—if you invest wisely, you could be set for the future.

“A successful business venture can provide you with the kind of financial stability that owning a house might not,” he continued, emphasizing the importance of building wealth through smart, sustainable means.

Beyond property, the comedian also weighed in on the institution of marriage. He suggested that individuals, particularly men, might want to reconsider rushing into marriage, which he believes often benefits women more than men.

“Marriage, as we know it, tends to work out better for women. For men, it’s a different story,” Geh Geh said bluntly. His advice to young men was to prioritize personal development and financial growth before tying the knot.

“Get yourself together first—build your career, invest in yourself. Marriage can come later,” he added, emphasizing that entering into such a serious commitment without having established oneself could lead to unnecessary strain.
