You have accused a man, you say he should come,to do what? – Egyapa-Mercer fumes on Ken Ofori-Atta’s extradition

Former Member of Parliament for Sekondi, Andrews Egyapa-Mercer, has questioned the view that public officials are automatically required by law to account for their stewardship after leaving office, as he defended former Finance Minister Ken Ofori-Atta.

Speaking during a heated discussion on Joy News on Saturday, January 10, 2026, Egyapa-Mercer challenged critics to identify any specific law that compels former public office holders to submit themselves for questioning when no criminal charge has been filed against them.

“Show me the law that says that when you said in public office, when you finish, you have to account,” he said.

According to the former Minister of Tourism, accountability must be based on law and due process, not public pressure or political emotions.

He argued that unless the Attorney-General or state investigative bodies have formally accused an individual of a crime, there is no legal justification to compel that person to appear before investigators.

“The Attorney-General and the state investigative agencies have accused him (Ken Ofori-Atta) of committing a crime true or false? I have served in public office; nobody has accused me of committing any crime. You have accused a man, you say he should come.

“To do what? If you have your proof, the law is clear. Go to court. Establish a prima facie case. Leave your evidence. If he is minded to come and cross-examine your witnesses, let him do so. If he’s not minded to do it, go ahead with your case.”

He stressed that where evidence of wrongdoing exists, investigators should follow the legal process by going to court, establishing a prima facie case, and allowing the matter to be determined by the judiciary.
