Youth who cry over unemployment in today’s world are lazy – KNUST Lecturer

Prof. John Osei Bobei-Boahin, a Political Science lecturer at the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST), has sparked debate with his recent comments on youth unemployment in Ghana.

Speaking in an interview on Onua FM with host Nana Yaa Brefo, Prof. Bobei-Boahin boldly stated that many young people who complain about joblessness are simply lazy.

During the conversation, Nana Yaa Brefo suggested that universities share some of the blame for producing graduates through theory-based programs that do not match real-world demands. However, the professor firmly rejected this claim, insisting that the responsibility lies with the youth themselves.

“In my ten years of teaching political science, I’ve come to realize that the youth of today lack initiative,” he said. “They don’t coordinate or collaborate, and that’s a big part of the problem.”

He encouraged graduates, even those from fields like history, to think creatively. “A history graduate can travel to various towns and work with chiefs to document their history, culture, and traditions. But instead, many just sit and wait to be employed.”

Prof. Bobei-Boahin recalled his own student days, noting that he had neither phones nor laptops to support his research, yet he made the most of what was available to him.

“In today’s world, people are making money and running businesses from their bedrooms. So a young person can’t tell me they’re unemployed. There are opportunities — they just have to be willing to go after them,” he concluded.
