2025 BECE paper faces cancellation due to exam malpractices
The West African Examinations Council (WAEC) has expressed concern about the possible cancellation of some 2025 Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE) papers due to reports of widespread exam malpractice.
According to WAEC’s Head of Public Relations, John Kapi, 25 individuals have been arrested in connection with various forms of misconduct during the exams.
Those arrested include supervisors, headmasters, teachers, and invigilators.
“These are not just isolated cases. We’re talking about people in positions of trust trying to cheat the system,” Mr. Kapi stated.
Investigations revealed that some individuals tried to answer questions for candidates or distributed pre-solved answers.
Others were found with photos of exam questions on their phones, allegedly sent to accomplices outside the examination centres.
WAEC is also investigating a viral video in which a student is seen praising certain invigilators for allegedly helping candidates during the exams. The Council has pledged to take action if the claims are verified.
Mr. Kapi stressed that any paper confirmed to have been compromised will be cancelled, adding that WAEC remains committed to maintaining the integrity of the examination process.
