69 suspected H1N1 cases reported in two SHS in Eastern Region

Health authorities in the Eastern Region are keeping a close watch on a suspected outbreak of H1N1 influenza at Anum Presbyterian Senior High School and Boso Senior High School in the Asuogyaman District, where a total of 69 suspected cases have been recorded so far.

According to the Eastern Regional Health Directorate, an initial set of 25 samples was taken from affected students and sent to the Noguchi Memorial Institute for Medical Research for testing. Out of those, 9 came back positive for H1N1, commonly referred to as swine flu.

Following the confirmed cases, Disease Control Officers visited the schools on Sunday, June 29, and collected another 44 samples for further laboratory analysis as part of ongoing efforts to contain the spread of the virus.

In the meantime, students who have shown symptoms are being kept in isolation. School authorities have also directed that all students and staff wear nose masks on campus as a basic preventive measure.

H1N1 influenza is a contagious respiratory illness that spreads mainly through droplets when infected persons cough, sneeze, or talk. The virus can also be picked up from contaminated surfaces if someone touches their mouth, nose, or eyes afterward. While many people recover within a few days, H1N1 can lead to severe illness, especially in people with underlying health conditions.

The Ghana Health Service (GHS) has confirmed that it is actively involved in managing the situation. Health professionals are closely monitoring the health of both students and staff within the affected schools.

As of now, no decision has been made to temporarily close either of the two schools. Instead, authorities are focusing on reinforcing safety protocols and ensuring early detection and treatment of any new cases.

Health officials are urging everyone within the school communities to be vigilant. They have advised regular handwashing with soap, proper wearing of nose masks, and the immediate reporting of any flu-like symptoms such as fever, cough, sore throat, or body aches.

Meanwhile, the management of Anum Presbyterian and Boso SHS have called for calm among parents and guardians. They say they are working closely with health authorities to manage the situation and ensure the safety and wellbeing of all students.

The Ghana Health Service says it will provide updates as more test results become available and continue to support the schools with medical supplies and personnel to respond to the outbreak.
