Azumah Nelson celebrates as Ibrahim Mahama gifts him Toyota Fortuner and cash

Ghanaian businessman Ibrahim Mahama has honoured boxing legend Azumah Nelson with a brand-new Toyota Fortuner and an undisclosed cash package in appreciation of his immense contributions to boxing and national development.

The presentation took place on Monday, June 16, 2025, at Mr Mahama’s office in Accra. The gesture followed a courtesy visit by a delegation led by Sharaf Mahama, CEO of Legacy Rise Sports and son of President John Dramani Mahama. British-Nigerian heavyweight champion Anthony Joshua was also part of the delegation.

The visit came after the successful Battle of the Beasts boxing event held at the Bukom Boxing Arena on Friday, June 13. The group had earlier paid a visit to President Mahama at Jubilee House before calling on Mr Ibrahim Mahama to thank him for his continued support of Ghanaian sports.

Describing Azumah Nelson as “arguably Africa’s greatest boxer,” Ibrahim Mahama said the donation was a way of recognising Nelson’s achievements and his continued role in nurturing young talent and promoting boxing in Ghana.

Azumah Nelson, visibly touched by the gesture, expressed heartfelt gratitude. “I am grateful to Ibrahim Mahama and Sharaf Mahama for this unexpected honour,” he said. “I only came here to support Sharaf’s work in boxing, a sport I have lived for my entire life.”

Also present were members of Anthony Joshua’s team, sports entrepreneur Yaw Sakyi Afari of RITE Sports, businessman Henry Quarshie, and associates of Legacy Rise Sports, along with close friends of Ibrahim Mahama.

Ibrahim Mahama, the founder of Engineers and Planners and Dzata Cement Limited, is widely recognised for his philanthropic work in education, sports, and infrastructure development. The donation reflects his broader mission to support Ghanaian icons and promote sports growth in the country.

The Battle of the Beasts event has since been praised for its high-level organisation and its role in raising the international profile of Ghanaian boxing.
