Bawumia to defend Opoku Prempeh’s fate as choice for running mate today

Flag bearer of the governing New Patriotic Party (NPP), Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, will today, Thursday, July 04, 2024, meet with the National Council (NEC) of the on his choice of running mate ahead of the December 7 general elections.

The Vice President will be defending his choice of Dr. Matthew Opoku Prempeh, the Energy Minister, as the best person fit to partner him for the contest.

The meeting is part of the constitution of the New Patriotic Party which mandates the presidential candidate to consult the NEC on the choice of candidate for a running mate.

National Organiser for the party, Henry Nana Boakye, has been explaining to Accra based Citi News, the legality of the defence.

“In our party’s constitution, Article 13 is quite clear that whoever the nominee is, whoever you intend to present as a running mate, you must do so in consultation with the National Council. So he [Bawumia] is presenting before the National Council the MP for Manhyia South and Minister for Energy, Dr. Mathew Opoku Prempeh [as his running mate].”

The Vice President presented Dr. Matthew Opoku Prempeh’s name to President Akufo-Addo Tuesday, June 25, 2024, as the person he wants to pair for the presidential race.

He informed leadership of the NPP and the Majority caucus in Parliament as well. Following his nomination, there have been mixed reactions over the Manyhia South MP’s clout with others saying he is arrogant and does not posses the charisma to sway floating voters.

Member of Parliament for Asante Akyem North, Andy Kwame Appiah-Kubi, for instance, has kicked against Opoku Prempeh’s nomination, saying he is not someone who can stand in to lead the campaign in the absence of the flag bearer, adding that he lacks the intelligence to unite the party front.

Bawumia’s running mate: I will choose somebody who will submit to the presidency and bring parliament closer to the executive, not NAPO – NPP MP
