Chelsea “are expecting” to be charged for their breaches of the Premier League’s Profit and Sustainability Rules during Roman Abramovich’s tenure as owner of the club, an exclusive by Pete O’Rourke for Football Insider has claimed today.
On their podcast, the transfer correspondent claimed that Chelsea think they’ll get a sanction “sooner rather than later.” Whether that’s a point penalty as we’ve seen awarded to Everton and Nottingham Forest this season, or just a fine, isn’t yet clear.
The new ownership opened up the books and flagged up inconsistencies from the Abramovich era in order to reduce any potential punishments and to show they want a fresh start. £150m of the money they agreed to pay for Chelsea has already been reserved for paying potential fines, with UEFA already having received £8.6m for Financial Fair Play breaches last July.
It will be very interesting to see what happens over the next few months, with the Premier League also looking likely to tear up their PSR rules entirely after the farcical back and forth with Everton and Forest this year already.
