Chelsea eyeing €50m Argentine striker before January transfer window
Chelsea appear to have set their sights on Santiago Castro, a young Argentine striker currently playing for Bologna, ahead of the January transfer window. Reports from Il Resto del Carlino (via TUTTOmercatoWEB) suggest that the Blues are keeping close tabs on the 21-year-old, although no formal offer has been made yet.

The interest comes as Chelsea continue to struggle with a shortage of reliable options up front. Liam Delap’s eventual return from injury is expected to help, but Enzo Maresca’s side still lack a true out-and-out number nine. Joao Pedro, who has often led the line, is naturally better suited to playing in a supporting role between a striker and an attacking midfielder rather than as a lone centre-forward.
Chelsea fans have been calling for the club to sign a proven goal scorer, but that seems unlikely given the club’s recent transfer approach. Since the ownership change, the Blues have largely focused on acquiring young players with long-term potential rather than ready-made stars. While this youth-focused strategy has occasionally paid off, it has also produced mixed results — with some prospects thriving and others failing to make the desired impact.
Santiago Castro fits the profile of the type of player Chelsea now typically target. The Argentine forward does not boast an eye-catching scoring record but has shown flashes of potential. Last season, he scored eight goals in 36 Serie A appearances for Bologna, and so far this campaign, he has one goal and one assist to his name.
At just 21, Castro is still developing and has room to grow into a more complete striker. Chelsea’s recruitment team reportedly view him as a player with strong technical ability, good movement, and the physicality needed to adapt to Premier League football.
However, Bologna are not expected to let him go cheaply. The Italian club are believed to value Castro at around €50 million, a figure that many would consider steep for a player who has yet to prove himself at the highest level. Still, Chelsea’s owners have shown a willingness to invest heavily in young talent if they believe in the player’s potential.
Any deal for Castro would therefore be based on long-term projection rather than immediate impact. For Chelsea, the move would be another gamble on youth — one that could either pay off handsomely or add to their growing list of underwhelming attacking signings.
With the January transfer window approaching, Chelsea’s attacking options remain under scrutiny. If Castro continues to impress in Serie A, it would not be surprising to see the Blues make an official move. Whether fans will welcome yet another “project” player instead of a proven goal scorer, however, remains to be seen…CONTINUE MORE READING>>>
