Don’t allow banks to photocopy your Ghana Card – NIA urges public

The National Identification Authority (NIA) has cautioned the general public against allowing financial institutions, particularly banks, to photocopy their Ghana Cards.

He stressed that the act of photocopying the Ghana Card compromises both data security and the credibility of the national identification system. As a result, he called on the public to resist handing over their cards for such purposes.

Speaking at a press briefing on Wednesday June 18, the Head of Corporate Affairs at the NIA, Williams Ampomah Emmanuel Darlas, expressed concern that many institutions continue to rely on visual checks, also known as ocular verification instead of subscribing to the Authority’s official biometric verification platform.

“We plead with the public, do not allow any institution to photocopy your Ghana Card. The institutions are supposed to come to us for the data for them to do proper biometric verification. We do not accept institutions that are doing ocular verification. So we are warning the institutions to desist from that,” said.

Mr Darlas also urged all institutions that require identity verification to register and use its biometric verification platform to access accurate and secure data directly from the Authority.

“We want to use this medium to caution institutions that are doing verification. Unfortunately, most of these institutions, instead of subscribing to our verification platforms to get the right information, they resort to taking the physical Ghana Card and making a photocopy of it,” he stated.
