Don’t step your foot in any Zongo community – Zongo youth group warns Ken Agyapong

The Zongo Youth Movement, a Muslim advocacy group, has strongly cautioned New Patriotic Party (NPP) flagbearer hopeful Kennedy Agyapong to steer his campaign away from Zongo and Muslim communities. This follows controversial comments allegedly made by a member of his campaign team.

The group is demanding a formal apology to the Muslim community and the general Ghanaian public, stressing that political campaigns should not compromise national unity and religious harmony.

Their concern stems from remarks reportedly made by Dr. Stephen Amoah, also known as Sticka, suggesting that the NPP’s loss in the 2024 elections was due to the Islamic faith of former Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia.

In an interview with Citi News, Abdullai Ali, the Public Relations Officer of the Zongo Youth Movement, criticised the statement as divisive and against Ghana’s tradition of religious tolerance. He called on both Dr. Amoah and Kennedy Agyapong to publicly apologise.

“It is not unfair to associate these remarks with Kennedy Agyapong’s camp. After the comments were made, no one from his team came forward to disown or condemn them. In fact, some members defended the claim on TV and radio using misleading data,” he said.

Ali further noted that a direct disassociation from Dr. Amoah’s statement by Kennedy Agyapong would have changed the focus of criticism. “If Kennedy Agyapong had issued a statement distancing himself from the remarks, we would have focused only on Dr. Amoah. But the silence from his camp speaks volumes.”
