FLASHBACK: NDC planning to stop me from becoming NPP Nat’l Chairman – Wontumi

In an old video DailyNewsGhana sighted online, the Ashanti Regional Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Bernard Antwi Boasiako—widely known as Chairman Wontumi—has accused the ruling National Democratic Congress (NDC) of deliberately targeting his businesses due to his ambition to lead the NPP to victory in the 2028 general elections.

Speaking on Wontumi TV, his private television station, Chairman Wontumi declared that his decision to contest the NPP’s National Chairman position in 2026 has struck fear into the heart of the NDC, leading to what he describes as a politically motivated attack on his businesses, especially Akonta Mining.

“The NDC is scared of Wontumi,” he stated boldly. “If the NPP gets its act together, we will easily win the 2028 elections, and they know I am the one who can lead us there.”

Wontumi’s comments come at a time when his mining company, Akonta Mining, is under fire for allegedly engaging in illegal mining activities in forest reserves. The company’s licence was recently revoked by the NDC government, which has accused it of violating environmental laws—a charge Wontumi denies.

The allegations

“These allegations are all false,” he said. “They are attacking me because I never entered government, never sat on any public board, and never received any government contract, yet they’re trying to destroy my name and close my accounts.”

According to him, the government’s actions have no justification except to tarnish his image and cripple his financial base ahead of his anticipated campaign for the NPP’s national chairmanship.

“I’ve never been accused of stealing from the state,” he continued. “So how is it that they are chasing me, freezing accounts, and painting me as a criminal?”

Despite the ongoing legal and political challenges, Chairman Wontumi remains defiant. He believes the attacks are simply clearing the path for his rise to greater leadership within the NPP and eventually helping the party reclaim power in 2028.

“Wontumi is the people’s Chairman,” he said. “What’s happening now will only make me stronger. This is part of my journey to lead the NPP to victory.”

His bold claims have sparked fresh debate across political circles, with critics accusing him of playing the victim card, while supporters rally behind his message of political persecution and party revival.
