GES announces call for entries for the 2025 Samira Bawumia literature prize

The Ghana Education Service (GES) has officially opened entries for the 2025 edition of the prestigious Samira Bawumia Literature Prize.

In a circular dated 6th June 2025 and signed by Mr. Prince C. Agyemang-Duah, Director of the Schools and Instructions Division, GES has instructed all Regional Directors of Education to inform Heads of Junior and Senior High Schools about the competition.

The Samira Bawumia Literature Prize is an initiative of the Samira Empowerment and Humanitarian Project (SEHP), championed by the Second Lady of Ghana, H.E. Hajia Samira Bawumia. It aims to encourage literary creativity among students and give young Ghanaians a platform to share their voices through writing.

The circular urged all Regional Directors to ensure that Heads of Schools not only disseminate the information but also encourage students to participate actively. GES emphasized that the announcement should be given proper attention in schools to boost participation across the country.

Since its inception, the competition has helped nurture talented young writers and allowed them to explore topics such as social issues, culture, identity, and development through storytelling.

Details about the theme, submission guidelines, and deadlines are contained in an accompanying letter from SEHP, referenced in the GES memo.

Copies of the circular have also been sent to the Acting Director-General and the Deputy Director-Generals at GES Headquarters for their information and wider circulation.

The competition continues to gain national attention, and GES is encouraging all students, teachers, and stakeholders to take full advantage of this opportunity to showcase Ghana’s rich storytelling culture through the creativity of the next generation.
