Ghana ranked 7th in the latest Most Peaceful African countries in 2025: Check full list
Mauritius has been named the most peaceful country in Africa for 2025, according to the newly released Global Peace Index (GPI). The island nation ranks 26th globally, maintaining its reputation for political stability, low crime, and a high standard of living.
Following Mauritius is Botswana, which holds the 43rd position worldwide and is second on the African continent. Namibia completes the top three in Africa, securing the 50th spot globally.
The 2025 Global Peace Index, compiled by the Institute for Economics and Peace (IEP), assesses the level of peace in 163 countries based on 23 indicators. These include measures of safety and security, ongoing conflict, and militarisation.
Despite these encouraging rankings, the report shows a general decline in peace across Sub-Saharan Africa. The region’s average peace score fell by 0.17% in 2025, pointing to growing instability in several countries.
Globally, the picture is even more concerning. The IEP estimates that violence cost the world nearly $20 trillion in 2024. The Middle East and North Africa (MENA) region remains the least peaceful, with four of the ten most conflict-ridden countries. South Asia also recorded significant setbacks, especially in Bangladesh and Pakistan, making it the second least peaceful region worldwide.
Nevertheless, the progress in countries like Mauritius, Botswana, and Namibia shows that peace is still achievable and sustainable in parts of Africa.
