Chelsea player has ‘enjoyed’ being a leader this season and helping him develop

One Chelsea player has admitted that he has enjoyed having to step up as a leader amongst his peers in the current Chelsea squad this season.

Leaders are something that this young Chelsea squad has lacked at times, so they have had to lean on more younger players for leadership qualities and asking them to develop quicker and step up to the mark.

Conor Gallagher is one of them. With the regular and long-term injuries that both Reece James and Ben Chilwell have faced this season and in the past, Gallagher as third captain option has been named the captain more often than not. James is the captain but is once again out injured after surgery, and Chilwell is the vice-captain but also suffers consistent injuries. So the responsibilities have rested on the shoulders of Gallagher, and he has been speaking about this on international break this week, via The Evening Standard.

He said: “I think gaining an experience wherever in football, if it is club or international, you improve in certain scenarios. In tournaments coming up with England, gaining the experience I’ve had in the two cup competitions with Chelsea and getting as far as we have done will definitely help, being in those positions.

“It always helps when you are performing well for your club. It is what Gareth and the others are looking at. I’ll continue to work my hardest for Chelsea and give myself the best opportunity to be in that squad.”
